Odysseus was about to take a long voyage upon the Wine-Dark Sea. He entered into a contract with Doofisious to outfit his black ship for the voyage at a price of 9,000 drachmas. Odysseus paid Doofisius 2,000 drachmas at the time Bold Odysseus put his mighty hand to the sacred contract. If the sacred contract had been performed, it would have cost Doofisius 7,000 silver drachmas to perform that which was to be performed by him. But Faithless Odysseus breached the sacred contract at a time when Rosy-Fingered Dawn had lighted the Wine-Dark Sea (and when Doofisious had spent 3,000 drachmas in performing). How much should the gods award Aggrieved Doofisious in damages? |
